COVID 19 Lessons Being Learned

For years experts predicted a flu-related pandemic that would surpass the influenza pandemic of 1918, which killed more people than the Great War (WW1). We are all experiencing a pandemic crisis this year. We have needed to fast tract tele medicine projects and are witnessing an increase in malware campaigns directed at healthcare sites, including the U.S. Health and Human Services Department, which suffered an attack on its computer system. We are the lessons being learned and need processes in place to improve stakeholder satisfaction.

Combating the Rise in Cloud-based Threats

As the cloud migration continues, securing data and critical infrastructure is going to require new approaches. Organizations have struggled to maintain control of critical data and ensure real-time threat intelligence, giving cloud-based threats the ability to multiply. Data buckets being misconfigured, or inadequately secured increases the risk of a breach. Being able to manually manage security for large web application infrastructures has become a thing of the past. As such, organizations are being pushed to reevaluate their approach to web application security.

Takeaways:

  • The rise of cloud migration means security will need to adapt
  • Many organizations have struggled to secure data
  •  Cybersecurity threats will only increase and become more complex

Interoperability

One of the most significant requirements to provide high-quality care also is one of the most difficult to achieve true interoperability between healthcare providers, systems, technology and the information each of needs in order to achieve their respective goals. Interoperability is a problem throughout healthcare as disparate vendors, complex processes and clinical standards create tremendous barriers to delivering improved patient experiences and better outcomes. Lack of interoperability is perhaps the largest contributor to medical errors, the 3rd leading cause of death in the US

Takeaways:
  1. How do we maintain security and privacy while sharing information
  2. How do we develop efficient and usable solutions instead of waiting for regulations, vendors, etc.
  3. What are the characteristics of a cost effective infrastructure
  4. What are key best practices and examples of success
  5. Is there an ROI model for investment in interoperability
  6. What is needed beyond the EHR? EPIC is now using? CHR? comprehensive health record. Is this the right path
  7. What are key best practices and examples of success

The Expansion of Telehealth

Telehealth services are offered by a wide array of doctors, health systems and medical specialties. A senior citizen recovering in post-acute care, for example, can receive an on-camera consultation without the physical and financial toll of travel. The benefits will become more and more evident as more insurers move to cover telehealth consultations.  Such exchanges will increasingly go beyond a patient's typical providers to encompass a wide range of care needs. This will be pivotal for people in outlying or underserved areas who require the care of a specialist.

Adapting to Remote Work Models and Redefining End-User Support in the New Normal
The shift to remote work in response to the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the deeply rooted inefficiencies of internal end-user support models. As users struggled to connect devices and deploy applications from makeshift offices, help desks were, for a variety of reasons, ill-equipped to deal with the massive spike in demand for support services.

Today, as businesses develop strategies for "new normal" of business operations, enhanced end-user support capabilities - specifically around process discipline and remote access - are a critical priority. This session will examine IT service requirements for businesses adapting to today's evolving landscape.

Takeaways will include:
  • Challenges posed by the shift to remote work following the pandemic
  • Why in-house support teams struggled to address remote workforce requirements
  • Capabilities that will be needed to support the "new normal" of business operations

Creating a Virtual Care Program For Complex Populations

While telehealth, remote monitoring and other virtual health modalities have seen significant growth in recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic has supercharged that growth. Providers and patients alike see it as a way to deliver necessary care while helping to protect the safety of both sides. Nevertheless, creating a virtual health program for populations with complex needs requires organizations to take a more flexible and expansive approach to meet patients where they are. This conversation will explore best practices and challenges from the lens of those on the front lines of building such programs.

Takeaways

  1. What are the various modalities available to deploy virtual care, and the benefits and challenges of each
  2. What are the needs of individuals with complex medical and behavioral issues, and how they can be addressed through virtual care options?
  3. How should social determinants be taken into account when deploying a virtual care program?

Interoperability in Healthcare (or the lack of)

John Glaser from the Harvard Business Review stated the following: "The Covid-19 pandemic presents the U.S. health care system with a mind-boggling array of challenges. One of the most urgent is coping with a simultaneous glut and dearth of information. Between tracking outbreaks, staying abreast of the latest information on effective treatments and vaccine development, keeping tabs on how each patient is doing, and recognizing and documenting a seemingly endless stream of weird new symptoms, the entire medical community is being chronically overwhelmed."

The root cause has always pointed to a systemic lack of interoperability in healthcare and life sciences (HCLS).

In this presentation, I will explore how Equinix, not typically associated with supporting the HCLS industry, is using its platform as the foundation to help fix healthcare by addressing interoperability. I will show how the Healthcare industry can construct a path towards interoperability by:

  1. Using Equinix as the foundation for interconnection
  2. Building regional hubs in key markets/geographies
  3. Leveraging our dense ecosystem of companies to peer privately and securely

How Deep and Shallow Learning can Work Together to Create Cost Savings

How deep and shallow learning can work together to create cost savings Applying artificial intelligence to patient data enables efficiencies and better outcomes for its Medicaid patients. For all the hype and excited pronouncements about the impacts it can have driving healthcare efficiencies, artificial intelligence is still not deployed as widely (or wisely) as it could be.But many health systems are working in earnest to roll out AI-driven analytics projects - even if their particular payoff isn't quite yet in sight - with the understanding that the technology is evolving at a dizzying pace, and big improvements could be just around the corner.

Takeaways:

  1. Potential for AI and machine learning for better population health outcomes
  2. Utilizing shallow learning - gain similarly useful insights from smaller data sets with less heavy lifting than we are using with deep learning
  3. Predicting hospitalization, emergency room use, or predicting high-cost patients versus low-cost patients
  4. Predicting the risk for the populations we are managing.
